Curatorial note

This small plaster relief by Soane’s friend, the celebrated sculptor John Flaxman, and another the same size, ‘Adam and Eve in Paradise’ (M959), depict scenes from John Milton's Paradise Lost. In his Royal Academy lectures, Flaxman urged sculptors to take subjects from this celebrated epic poem.
