Curatorial note

This small relief by Soane’s friend, the celebrated sculptor John Flaxman, along with another the same size, ‘Satan fleeing from the angels Gabriel and Ithuriel' (M965), depicts a scene from John Milton's Paradise Lost. In his Royal Academy lectures, Flaxman urged sculptors to take subjects from this celebrated epic poem.
