Curatorial note

Soane never visited Greece and owned relatively few casts of Greek ornament and sadly it is not known how he acquired this one. The Treasury of Atreus was a well-known building which he illustrated in his Royal Academy lectures. The spiral decoration etched into its surfaces must have influenced Soane when he created identical incised decoration on his own buildings, for example, on the edges of the dome of the adjacent Breakfast Room at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields.
