Curatorial note
This is a cast of a fragment in the British Museum (Museum number 1816,0610.169), purchased from Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin (Lord Elgin) in 1816. It is from the Temple of Demeter at Eleusis. The 1837 inventories of Soane's collection refer to it as a fleuron from the Temple of Ceres, using the Roman name for the Goddess. The original fragment is probably the finial of a ancient Greek marble tombstone.
It is shown in a watercolour capriccio of works in Soane's collection, dated October 12th 1825, Vol. 82_96, but seemingly depicted without the frame it was later mounted in.
