Curatorial note
This piece appears to be a cast of the frieze of the chimneypiece originally in Lady Spencer's Dressing Room at Spencer House, London. However, in the 1837 AB inventory of the collection it is carefully described as 'Piece of the frieze of a Chimney-piece with a medallion. Composition'. Composition or 'compo' is a form of mouldable resin invented in the late 18th century and commonly used for picture frames and small-scale ornament in the Soane period.
