Curatorial note
Celebrated eagle in the porch at SS. Apostoli in Rome was quoted directly by Soane, who placed the motif on top of the gateway at Pitzhanger Manor. A pair of plaster versions of the eagle alone were also used to oranment the Shakespeare Recess at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields. Sadly, these disappeared in post-Soane alterations to the Recess in the late 19th century: they have now been reinstated with facsimiles made by Taylor Pearce Restoration based on M712 (2012-13).
