Curatorial note

This cast is recorded as being taken from a Roman fragment in the Medici Gardens, Rome. These were the gardens of the Villa Medici on the site of the ancient Roman Gardens of Lucullus on the Pincian Hill. During the medieval period the area became vineyards until the Medicis built their villa there in the late 1500s). The gardens were filled with antique fragments – many found on the site. The villa came into the possession of Napoleon Bonaparte and he presented it to the French State – it has housed the French Academy in Rome since 1803. Many of the Medici antiquities were transferred to Florence in the 18th century and can be seen at the Uffizi.
