Curatorial note

Scale 2ft to 1in. In extending the screen wall along Lothbury to twice its original length during 1802-03, Soane gave considerable thought to providing a suitable feature for the centre of the entire frontage. Objections having been raised to his proposal for a Corinthian hexastyle portico, he eventually settled for a more modest projection, as shown by MP215, was erected in 1805. An alternative treatment of its attic is provided by M264.
