Curatorial note
The 1837 AB inventory of the collection (p.33) describes this piece as 'A piece of Antique bas relief / A female figure seated, leaning / on a vase'. In fact this small square panel is a cast from a conical relief on the base of a Roman candelabrum depicting a satyr seated facing a table wtih a casket on it. Propped against the table ( left) is a thyrsos (or thyrsus) - a staff topped with a pine cone. The figure wears a mantle and is seated on a rock covered with an animal skin. He holds the fore-legs of a goat standing on its hind legs. There is a curved item on the ground at the satyr's feet - a club or perhaps a musical instrument?
The original marble is now in the Muzeum Narodowe (National Museum), Warsaw, Poland (inventory 199384), acquired in 1948 (see Zahle, p.261).
There is another cast of this panel in the Thorwaldsen Collection in Copenhagen (L347), rather crisper in detail and conical in form, unlike this panel which has been produced in a rectangular format. Other casts are in Dresden and in Bonn, where there is a cast of the whole candelabrum base. The original is known to have been restored by Cavaceppi. See Zahle p.261 for a full list and references.
