Curatorial note

A note on a piece of paper tipped in to the AB copy of the 1837 inventory records the gift of this tile in 1841, several years after Soane's death. It states that it was discovered in preparing the foundations for the City of London School and therefore is probably from the ancient Church of St Mary Magdalen, which was on that site until it was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Provenance help-art-provenance

Presented by Mr C. P. Hunter 8th January 1841 (not part of Sir John Soane's collection)
