Curatorial note

This plaster is a full-scale model for one of the ornaments designed by John Soane for his Bank of England, inspired by antique precedents but here combining the contrasting wave forms of a solid shell and three pieces of honeysuckle foliage. The final version used at the Bank would have been carved in stone or marble from this model.
