Cast of a relief of Venus from one of the Barberini candelabra in the Vatican

Plaster cast

Museum number: M1356

On display: Drawing Office - also known as the Students Room (pre-booked tours only)
All spaces are in No. 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields unless identified as in No. 12, Soane's first house. For tours https://www.soane.org/your-visit

Curatorial note

This cast is from Barberini candelabrum Vatican, Museo Pio-Clementino, Galleria delle statue, inv. 547. The 1837 inventories of the Soane Museum refer to the figure as 'Speranza' (Hope) but it is more commonly identfied as Aphrodite / Venus.

The marble candelabrum has a three-sided base, each face trapezoid in shape. Soane owned casts of two of the panels, this one and one of Minerva (M1357) but not of the third (a figure of Ares - for an image of that figure see British Museum drawing reference 2013,5015.1.33).
