Model for a chimneypiece, French

16th century

Terracotta

Museum number: M1332

On display: Drawing Office - also known as the Students Room (pre-booked tours only)
All spaces are in No. 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields unless identified as in No. 12, Soane's first house. For tours https://www.soane.org/your-visit

Curatorial note

This small model incorporates what appears to be a segment of a circular patera or a section of ceiling decoration, modelled to a larger scale than the chimnneypiece itself, mounted within the fireplace opening. It was in Soane's collection by at least 1822 when it appears in a watercolour of the Students' Room, part of a larger composite view of interiors of the museum by J.M. Gandy, Soane Museum P113.
