Cast of a fragment of an antique votive relief

plaster

Museum number: M1331

Curatorial note

The original from which this cast was taken is recorded in the 1837 AB inventory of the collection as having been an 'ancient terra-cotta'. The figures are described as two Canephorae [Greek = Kanephorae] or "basket bearers" (they have baskets on their heads). These were young unmarried women in ancient Greece who held this honorific office and had the privilege of leading sacrificial processions at festivals.
