Curatorial note
Casts of two of the panels on the base of a celebrated Roman candelabrum in the collection of the Borghese family at the Villa Borghese in Rome. The Borghese candelabrum seems to be an escapee from a larger group of similar candelabra six of which were on display at the Church of Sant Agnese fuori le Mura in Rome by the 17th century. Those at St Agnese were restored by Lorenzo Cardelli in 1772 and casts are known to have been made after the restoration. However, it seems from the early records at the Soane that this pair of framed casts is from the Borghese example.
A cast of one of the Sant Agnese candelabra survives in the collection of the Royal Academy of Arts, acquired from Sir Thomas Lawrence's collection in 1830.
