Curatorial note

This cast was probably prepared in connection with the monument to Kemble (who died in 1823) in Westminster Abbey, on which Flaxman was working at the time of his death in 1826. Soane had the opportunity to select any works he wanted from Flaxman’s studio, and chose this amongst a number of others depicting famous contemporaries. In his lifetime this cast was displayed in the Colonnade at the back of the Museum.
