A cast of an ancient Greek funerary(?) relief depicting a seated woman holding the hand of a man
Plaster cast
Museum number: M1114
Not on display
Curatorial note
This cast seems to be from a yet to be identified Athenian grave stele of the 4th or 5th century.
Although its provenance is unknown it seems to have been in Soane's collection quite early as it appears in J.M. Gandy's watercolour view of the back of the Museum, drawn in 1811, SM P384 where it can be seen under the arch in the basement, lower left. Interestingly Gandy shows it with the head of the right-hand figure complete and in a wider plaster frame. This seems unlikely to be artist's licence as antiquities shown in this view seem to be rendered in very precise detail.
