Curatorial note

There is an ancient precedent for this cup or vase in the form of a grotesque male head. In the British Museum no. 1814,0704.301, a Roman cup in Cnidian Relief ware pottery, from Knidos (Turkey) dating from 60-120AD, formerly in the collection of Charles Townley and acquired in 1814, might have provided the models for this rather curious item.
