Ammonite from a flintstone, found on Walton Common, 1829

Museum number: L124

Not on display

Curatorial note

Fossilised marine mollusc. The name "ammonite" was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, resembling the tightly coiled rams' horns of the ancient Egyptian God Ammon. There is a link with architecture in that this form is also associated with the volutes of the capital of the ionic order.
