Curatorial note
The pair of casts BR1 and BR4 are perhaps taken from bronzes of 17th century Antwerp design and are rather Rubensian in composition. In this scene the figures seem to be cavorting in woodland, with trees left and right.
Similar themes were adopted by the Flemish baroque sculptor Francis Du Quesnoy (1597-1643) - for an example see his Bacchanal of putti in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (no.BK-2014-28) - and used by ivory carvers such as Gérard van Opstal (1595-1668), also working in Flanders in the mid-17th century (for an example see his Bacchanal of putti in the V&A no.A.33-1930).
