This small bronze lion belonged to the sculptor John Flaxman and is displayed in a showcase with one Roman Lar figure and another small figure made by Flaxman himself. The group was assembled by Flaxman and the pieces were already on their grey marble bases when they were acquired by Soane. Flaxman and Soane considered this lion to be an antique Roman piece: today it is considered 17th or 18th century, after the antique.
Soane also acquired from Flaxman a cast of this lion, see Soane Museum L79.
