Like the designs for surrounds for doors to the king's apartments above (6/6), these four designs for wall elevations for Queen Mary's Closet are likely to date towards the end of the first phase of works to the palace in 1689-94. They appear to have been made before Hawksmoor drew the designs for a bridge link to the Privy Garden in September 1694, as there is no provision on the elevation of the window wall (2; 110/64) for a door in the window opening to provide access to the balcony and the bridge.

Further research is needed on the author of the painted panels of floral decoration and a landscape scene. The most likely candidate is James Bogdani, who was paid (as 'James Bogdain') for 'work by him done in the Queen's Looking Glasse Closett in the Thames Gallery in 1694' (Wren Society, IV, p. 28).
