Design for the grounds by John Haverfield (1)

John Haverfield's design for the grounds is on a sheet watermarked 1799, dating the drawing to that year or later. Haverfield and Soane visited the property together on numerous occasions between 1793 and 1798, but Haverfield's involvement with the estate planning is unknown, as Haverfield worked independently of Soane and kept separate accounts and archives, now lost.

The drawing is for the grounds at Tyringham and includes the new house, office court, stables block and greenhouse. Farm buildings are shown with diagonal hatching, rather than pink wash, perhaps indicating that they are proposed buildings. A kitchen yard and orchard are beside the office court. Beyond, to the east, lies the stables court surrounded by the proposed farm buildings. A larger kitchen garden lies to the north and contains a greenhouse. Forest paths connect the house to the kitchen garden and poultry yard, passing the 'Garden kept Grounds' that are surrounded by a ha-ha.

See drawings 129 and 131 for more designs by John Haverfield the younger. Haverfield served as the Royal Gardener at Kew.
