'Madame B***' is identified with Octavie Belot, later Octavie Durey de Meinières, by J.M. Querard, Les supercheries litteraires, vol. 1, p. 434. A translation printed in Paris (see Emil Weller, Die falschen und fingirten Druckorte, vol. 2, p. 170), of the Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume's The history of England from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the accession of Henry VII, first published in London in 1762 (actually late 1761) and later incorporated with the previously published histories of the Tudors and the Stuarts into Hume's six-volume History of England, from the invasion of Julius Cæsar to the revolution in 1688, 1762, as volumes I and II. Madame Belot had already published the first French translation of The history of England, under the house of Tudor in 1763, following the Abbé Prévost's translation of The history of England, under the house of Stuart in 1760. 'Les quatre Volumes que j'aurai publiés, joints aux trois de la Maison de Stuart, traduits par feu M. l'Abbé Prévôt, composeront le corps complet de l'Histoire d'Angleterre, ...' (- 'Avertissement'). The last leaf of vol. I contains errata.
