Rollin's Histoire ancienne des Égyptiens, des Carthaginois, des Assyriens, des Babyloniens, des Mèdes et des Perses, des Macédoniens, des Grecs was first published in French in 1730--1738 and in English translation as The ancient history of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians, and Greeks, 1734--1739. The complete work consists of 14 volumes, vol. XI being printed in two volumes. The present catalogue entry describes volumes I--X of the Soane set of the complete work, which were published separately as the 4th edition in 1754; see copy notes below for the other volumes. Each volume has an additional volume title-page listing the contents. The plates were drawn by Hubert Gravelot and engraved by George Vertue, R.W. Seale, W.H. Toms, J.-P. LeBas, E. Bowen, T. Kitchin, L.-P. Boitard and Gravelot himself. With publisher's advertisements at end of vols V, VI, and IX. The maps (dated 1738--1740), here bound separately, were also published separately in 1757 as Twelve maps of antient geography, drawn by the sieur Danville, ... and designed for the explanation of Mr. Rollin's Antient history ... copied from the originals, engraved for the illustration of the large edition of that work, printed at Paris in six volumes in quarto, with letterpress title-page and contents leaf. Copy Notes The text volumes are bound as vols I--X in a set with Rollin's The history of the arts and sciences of the antients ..., 4 vols + plates, 1737--1739 (q.v.). Volume I inscribed in pencil on front pastedown with price 3/3/0. The maps are bound in a separate atlas volume with the manuscript title The Maps/ belonging to/ Rollin's Antient History and a list of the contents; also inserted between plates IV and V is a further hand-coloured map captioned 'A Map Of The Retreat Of The Ten Thousand', unnumbered but with page reference to 'Vol. IV. Page 76.'. Each volume is dated in ink in the same hand on front pastedown 1757, with traces of an earlier bookplate underneath Soane's spade-shield bookplate. Inscribed in vol. I p. 26 in ink by the same hand Montesquieu is of the opinion that the East India trade was not known to Solomon's time and that trade carried on thro the Red Sea by the order of Solomon was only to the eastern coast of Africa. See vol. 2 / p.23 of his Spirit of the laws; another marginal annotation in vol. II p. 20. Marginal marks of emphasis in pencil throughout.
