Edited and largely written by L.A. de Beaumelle. First published Paris, 1752. Imprint varies; vols. II--VIII: Aux depens de l'éditeur. Volume titles vary according to the correspondents included in each volume. The vol. I title-leaf is followed by an 'Avis Du Libraire' signed Jolly and dated Amsterdam, 4 January 1756, noting changes to the order of the Letters in this edition 'd'après les conseils de l'auteur des Mémoires, qui n'a pas eu le loisir de veiller à la première'. The Soane set is completed by a ninth volume, Lettres de Messire Paul Godet des Marais, Bruxelles, 1756 (q.v.). The Marquise de Maintenon, born Françoise d'Aubigné and previously married to the writer Paul Scarron, became the second wife of King Louis XIV after helping in secret to bring up his children by his (married) mistress the Marquise de Montespan.

Copy Notes The nine volumes, bound as a set, all bear a library shelf mark inscribed in ink on the front free-endpaper: D 172 nº 20. Bought from A. Maxwell for 4s., June 1810. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.2.4). Front free-endpaper in vol. I inscribed JSoane, probably John junior, Soane's eldest son.
