Anonymous. By Claude Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon (Crébillon fils). "The first edition appeared in 1742 ..., and this particular edition probably appeared between 1742 and 1745, if not later. It is a counterfeit edition, printed in England (probably London), as is more than obvious by not only the paper, type, signatures, woodcut decorations ... but by the fact that press figures appear throughout." See R. Dawson, Additions to the bibliographies of French prose fiction, 1618-1806 (Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth century, vol. 236), Oxford 1985, pp. 132--3. COPAC records copies with the same title and imprint but different pagination: Vol. 1: [6], 298 p.; vol. 2: [6], 264 p. In this edition vol. 1 pp. 133--136 are misnumbered 33--36. Crébillon had an English wife and associated with Garrick, Sterne and Wilkes on their visits to France. Publication of this erotic political satire drove him into temporary exile from Paris. ESTC n55085.

Binding C18th marbled calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-panelled spines including a coronet with five visible pearls in the compartment beneath the spine-label, red morocco spine-labels.
