Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane. Par M. Le Sage. Nouvelle édition, revue & corrigée. Avec des figures. Tome troisieme.
A Londres chez J.F. & C. Rivington, T. Longman, B. Law, G.G.J. & J. Robinson, & F. Wingrave, successeur de M. Nourse, 1790.
1 vol. [ex 4] ; 13.4 cm. (12º)
III: 306, [6] p., [8] pl.

Volume III only of four. Originally published 1715--35, and corrected by the author in 1747. Soane must have been very fond of Le Sage's picaresque novel, as there are copies (some partial) of ten different editions in his Library, in French, English and Italian (qq.v.); the earliest is the London French-language edition of 1749 (q.v.). The book is mentioned in George Wightwick's description of his time as Soane's amanuensis in 1826--27; see A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane, London 1927, episode 35 (especially pp. 398, 404--5).

Copy Notes Imperfect; vol. III only. Inscribed in ink on title-page John Soane/ 1800. Rear free-endpaper inscribed in ink (upside down) A Maitland, slightly cropped.

Binding C18th sheep, gilt-ruled spine, without spine-label; gilt-lettered as vol. '3'.
