LE SAGE, Alain-René (1668--1747)
[Le diable boiteux. English & French. 1796]
The devil upon two sticks. Or the crippled devil. In French and English. In two volumes. Vol. I. (II.)
London: printed for T. Boosey, 1796.
2 vols ; 16.3 cm. (12º)
I: [9], 175, 175, [1] p.
II: [7], 164, 164, [1] p.

Facing the English title-page is an additional title-page in French: Le diable boiteux. En francais et en anglois. Parallel text in French and English; facing pages bear duplicate numbering. Le Sage's picaresque novel Gil Blas seems to have been one of Soane's favourite books, and one he used to improve his command of French, as suggested by the presence in his library of a copy of Smollett's English translation heavily annotated with French vocabulary notes (1778 ed., q.v.) drawn from a French edition also in the library (1749 ed., q.v.). This parallel text edition of Le Sage's Spanish-inspired prose satire on Parisian society may have served a similar purpose. ESTC t301514.

Copy Notes An inscription in pencil in a large flowing hand is almost entirely obscured by Soane's die-sinker bookplate. Faint illegible notes in pencil in a small hand on the front free-endpaper, listing five items with figures.

Binding C18th sheep, gilt-ruled spine, dark green leather spine-label.

Reference Number 1011
