Originally published 1715--35, and corrected by the author in 1747. Soane must have been very fond of Le Sage's picaresque novel, as there are copies (some partial) of ten different editions in his Library, in French, English and Italian (qq.v.); the earliest is the London French-language edition of 1749 (q.v.). The book is mentioned in George Wightwick's description of his time as Soane's amanuensis in 1826--27; see A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane, London 1927, episode 35 (especially pp. 398, 404--5).

Copy Notes Lacking half-titles? Bought with a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quijote, 1812 (q.v.) from Mr Le Cointe for £1 2s., 19 September 1815. (Jnl 6, p. 158). B. Le Cointe was one of Soane's French language teachers.

Binding C19th calf, gilt roll-tooled borders and edges, gilt double-ruled spines, red morocco spine-labels. Bound uniformly with a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quijote, 1812 (see copy notes above).
