[Confessions. 1819]
Les confessions de J.J. Rousseau. Nouvelle édition. Tome premier. (second.)
A Paris (Place), chez Ledoux et Tenré, libraires,, 1819.
2 vols ; 13.4 cm. (18º)
I: [4], 558 p., [3] pl. (2 ports.)
II: [4], 588 p., [2] pl.
Rousseau's Confessions, widely regarded as the first modern autobiography, were composed in two parts, the first dealing with the first thirty years of Rousseau's life and the second with the next twenty-four. Both were published posthumously; the first part together with the unfinished Rêveries du promeneur solitaire in 1782 (q.v.) and the Seconde partie des confessions, dealing with the next twenty-four years, in 1789 (q.v.). Their appeal to Soane can be judged by the inscriptions in his copy of the 1783 edition in the library (q.v.). The plates in this edition, produced under the direction of Ambroise Tardieu, are labelled 'Tome 15' and 'Tome 16' as from a collected edition being Ledoux and Tenré's collected edition of 1819, signed 'G.P.' [i.e. Louis Germain Petitain]; the portraits are of Rousseau and Mme de Warens. The 'Avertissement De L'Éditeur' in vol. I is unsigned.
Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front free-endpapers John Soane / 1 Sept: 1819. This book was acquired during Soane's visit to Paris August--September 1819. Reference in ink on front free-endpaper of vol. I to 'Pere Castel, auteur du clavecin oculaire' on p. 459.
Binding Contemporary C19th tree sheep, gilt-tooled spines, red morocco spine-labels.
Reference Number 1016
