Translation by various hands (including E. du Silhouette, J. F. du Resnel du Bellay, M. Keating, C. P. Colardeau), edited by Elias de Joncourt. First published in six volumes in 1754 with a seventh volume added to the 1758 edition; a two-volume edition containing selected pieces had already appeared in 1749. Page 400 of vol. II is misnumbered 382.
Copy Notes With plate intended to face p. 19 in vol. III bound as a frontispiece. Bought from Thomas Boone for 9s., 9 June 1804. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.4). With Boone's price and hieroglyphs inscribed in pencil on the vol. I half-title. Also in Boone's hand on the facing front free-endpaper Bibliotheque de Callone. The French statesman Charles Alexandre de Calonne's proposals of financial reform might have saved the French monarchy but he was exiled in 1787 and lived in London until a few months before his death in 1802. The remainder of his library was sold at Christie's on 27 July 1803 [not in Lugt, but see Christie's sale 1594, New York, 22--23 March 2005, lot 236]; the catalogue of an earlier sale of furniture, works of art and books is in Soane's library (q.v.).
Binding C18th mottled sheep, gilt-tooled spine compartments with pomegranate motif, brown and olive morocco spine-labels.
