Extremely popular when first published in 1686, this work is written as by a savant explaining the new cosmology to a curious noblewoman. The discourses are written as "lectures" given over six evenings. Owing a great deal to the previous work of Copernicus (the heliocentric theory of the solar system) and Descartes (particularly his theory of vortex motion of the planets to counteract Newtons idea of gravity), the work rebuts the idea of a centre to the universe and speculates on the habitation of other planets. The fold-out plate is labelled: 'Tome II. Page 9'.
