Anonymous. By Jean Donneau de Visé. Originally published as part of his Diversitez galantes, 1665. It has also been attributed to either Madame de Villedieu or Claude Deschamps, sieur de Villiers (see catalogue of the Bibliothèque nationale). The imprint is false; the fictitious Cologne imprint of Pierre Marteau (or Pierre de Marteau) was probably invented by the Elzeviers in Amsterdam in the 1660s, and soon began to be used by other publishers and printers in the Netherlands, France and Germany to evade censorship of political satires, pirated editions and sexually explicit works. Binding C18th yellow paper boards with (later?) paper spine, MS. spine-title in ink 'Nouvelles/ Agnes de Castro -/ Anecdotes galantes' and date '1708'.
