The plates engraved by Charles Warren dated November and December 1796. Additional engraved title-page reads 'Centaur Not Fabulous, forming part of Cooke's Pocket Edition of Sacred Classics, ...'. The publisher Charles Cooke extended the formula of illustrated pocket editions previously used by John Bell in his Poets of Great Britain series (109 vols, 1776--82) to publish series of uniform pocket editions in other genres such as 'British Classics', 'Sacred Classics', novels and plays, all 'Superbly Embellished'. Two leaves of publisher's advertisements at the end with pages numbered 5--8. ESTC n55094.

Copy Notes Rear pastedown inscribed in pencil 3/4.

Binding Contemporary late C18th/early C19th tree calf, gilt-tooled spine, black and red leather spine-labels. Uniform with other volumes of Cooke's Pocket Editions in the Soane Museum.
