COWLEY, Abraham (1618--1667)
[Works. Part 1. 1681]
The works of Mr. Abraham Cowley. Consisting of those which were formerly printed: and those which he design'd for the press. Now published out of the authors original copies.
London [i.e. Brussels?]: printed by J. M. for Henry Herringman, 1681.
[62], 46, [2], 82, [6], 103, [1], 215, [1], 29, [1], 194, [2] p., engr. frontis. port. ; 15.5 cm. (12º)

Both this imprint and that of The second part of the works ... (1682, q.v.), however, are false; see Wing C6654 and C66664, where Brussels is suggested as the probably actual place of publication. M.R. Perkin says of this edition that "it was clearly not printed in England" and "was most likely piratical but may well have been commissioned in England." See M.R. Perkin, Abraham Cowley: a bibliography (Dawson, 1977), B9. 'The Mistress', 'Pindarique Odes', and 'Davideis' have special title-pages and separate pagination. Includes 'An Account of the Life And Writings of Mr. Abraham Cowley. Written to Mr. M. Clifford' by Thomas Sprat. The final leaf is blank. ESTC r30277; Wing C6656.

Copy Notes Lacking the final blank leaf recorded in ESTC and the above collation. Bound (1) with The second part of the works of Mr. Abraham Cowley, London [i.e. Brussels?], 1682 (q.v.).

Binding C17th(?) sheep, covers with blind fillets parallel to the spine, black spine-label.
