Volume II only. With a half title reading 'Sermons By Laurence Sterne, ...'. Volumes I and II of The sermons of Mr. Yorick were first published by R. and J. Dodsley in 1760. The figure of Parson Yorick first appears as a character in the first volume of Sterne's hugely popular novel The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman (q.v.), the first two volumes of which were published anonymously in 1759. Sterne evidently felt at home in this new identity, publishing his own sermons under the pseudonym of Yorick and later using the name for the protagonist of A sentimental journey through France and Italy, first published in 1768 (q.v.). Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting vol. I. First signature is misbound with conjugate pair A1.8 within A2.7, and A3.6 within A4.5. Inscription in pencil on front free-endpaper in Soane's hand, giving an itinerary: Islington / Leebridge / Epping forest, after you / have passed a great [pond] / on the right hand of / the road, you will see / an Inn frontg you / where the roads [intersect?] other - it is the Inn / where the Norwich Mail / changes for the first / stage from London in / its way to Newmarket. / Set out at 12.
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-ruled spine, without label or title, gilt-tooled volume number [arabic].
