First edition. Comprises 117 letters, including two from correspondents of Sterne; letter 58 may be a forgery. The memoirs here published are an amalgamation by Sterne's daughter Lydia, Mme. Medalle of two separate manuscripts by Sterne, untitled, the first reproduced in facsimile in Kenneth Monkman, Sterne's memoirs, 1985; the manuscript of the second is untraced. The plate engraved by J. Caldwall after Benjamin West is dated August 10th 1775. With advertisements on final page of vol. I for other works by Sterne printed for T. Becket, 'Of whom may be had, A Bust of Mr. Sterne, an exceeding good likeness, price 1l 7s bronzed.'. ESTC t14758.

Copy Notes Vol. I inscribed in ink on the half title: J. Soane / 1778; vols. II--III inscribed in ink on the title page: J. Soane; in all cases, the final 'e' has been added after 1783.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-panelled spines with floral ornament, red and green morocco spine-labels, pink silk bookmarks. The top spine compartment with the gilt-tooled arm and sword crest with motto 'AVANT' of Sir John Stuart, 3rd Baronet.
