Volume I title-page with medallion portrait engraved by Page; vol. II title-page with allegorical engraving explained on p. [3]. The first edition of the English translation of the first two volumes of the popular Lettres intéressantes du Pape Clément XIV (Ganganelli), 1776 (q.v.), had appeared earlier in the same year. Volume I has a half title reading 'Letters Of Pope Clement XIV (Ganganelli.) Vol. I.'. The Preface is by 'Mr. Caraccioli', i.e. Louis Antoine de Caraccioli. Some of the letters are spurious and are by Caraccioli. The translation of the third volume (1777), in two parts, was published in the same year by T. Durham and G. Kearsley. Soane was evidently impressed by the work, and transcribed numerous passages of an English edition (presumably this copy) in a notebook later labelled 'Extracts from various Authors. 1776' (Soane Case 139). ESTC n17179.

Copy Notes Volume II inscribed on title-page in ink: J. Soane / 1778 (the 'e' added after 1783).

Binding C18th calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red and green morocco spine-labels.

Additional Names Caraccioli, Louis Antoine de (1721--1803); Catholic Church. Pope (1769--1774 : Clement XIV); Ganganelli, Giovanni Vicenzo Antonio (1705--1774)
