Edited with commentary by Pieter Burman. Includes 'Epistola Critica ...' on Richard Bentley's Dissertation upon the epistles of Phalaris [&c.] (1697) by Francis Hare, first published in London, 1726. With an additional engraved title-page reading 'Phaedri Fabulae Aesopiae ...' by Folkema, and an engraved frontispiece portrait of Burman by Jacobus Houbraken from a painting by H. van der My.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink inside front cover: 29 Jan. 1807 Richardson 10½ and in another hand in pencil Nº 14-3; front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil with price -14-. Soane bought two copies of Phaedri Fabulae, Burman 4to from T. & W. Boone in on 2 April and 28 May 1827, the first bound in russia for £1 5s. and the second in an unspecified binding for 14s. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.12). Only the latter is still in Soane's library; on 8 May 1827 the Bishop of St. David's wrote to Soane requesting to accept his offer of Burman's / Phædrus (1727) which I / Saturday saw at your house and asking him to name the price; Soane responded two days later that having met with the book by chance he paid £1:5:0 and offered it to the Bishop as a present, replacing it later that month with the present copy. (Priv. Corr. II.S.1.1-2).

Binding C18th mottled calf, gilt-tooled corner-piece and lozenge spine compartments, spine-title direct-lettered in gilt.
