First edition published in 1796. 'Printed by C. Roworth' (title-page verso). William Cooke, from Ireland, was a barrister with literary and theatrical pretensions, the author of biographies of the actors Charles Macklin (q.v.) and Samuel Foote (q.v.).
Copy Notes Inscription in ink at head of title: To / John Soane Esqr. / with Complim[en]ts from the Author. Top strip of the title page folded over to preserve this inscription when the book was bound.
Binding Later C19th half green ribbed morocco, gilt-ruled spine, marbled-paper boards. The text is blocked out with twenty-four blank leaves at beginning and end. Bound by George Richmond for 1s. 6d., 20 May 1853. (Curatorial papers/Bailey/Parcel 1).
