The title-page to vol. II reads Pocket dictionary English, French, and Italian ... Burthen [sic] Venetian edition. ...; the title-page to vol. III reads Dictionnaire portatif françois, italien, et anglois ... . First published in London, 1777, Bottarelli's New Italian, English, and French pocket-dictionary went through several editions in London and Venice. The first Venetian edition (ESTC t232181) was published by Bettinelli in 1791. The final leaf of vol. I contains the licence to reprint the work dated 13 August 1801 on p. 515 and a catalogue of books for sale by Bettinelli on p. 516; the final leaf of vol. II, a catalogue of books in French on pp. 459--460; the final leaf of vol. III, a catalogue of books in English on p. 407, verso blank.
Copy Notes The Soane copy is a mixed set with volumes II and III from the first Venetian edition of 1791. The pagination and collation of vol. II are as described above, with a revised catalogue of books in French; vol. III has 408 pp., with the approbation dated16 November 1789 on p. 407 and a catalogue of books in English on p. 408. Volume I is inscribed on first free-endpaper in pencil: 635 and 8/- 3 vols; and in ink, in Soane's hand: 3 Vol: 8s-/ Lumley 1829. Volumes II and III are similarly inscribed by Soane. Bought from Edward Lumley on 27 May 1829. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.26).
Binding C19th sheep, Kleisterpapier decorated paper boards, gilt-tooled spine with bird ornament, later red morocco spine-labels, decorated-paper endleaves. Spine lining of printer's waste in German.
