The new and complete dictionary of the English language. In which all the words are introduced, the different spellings preserved, the sounds of the letters occasionally distinguished, the obsolete and uncommon words supported by authorities, and the different construction and uses illustrated by examples. London: printed for Edward and Charles Dilly; and R. Baldwin, 1775.
2 vols ; 20.3 cm. (8º in 4s)
I: [2], 28, [602] p.
II: [4], [586] p.

Price at foot of title-page: [Price Twelve Shillings]. Two variants do not have this statement of price; in one, the vol. I title-page has 'compendious' rather than 'comprehensive'. The text is unpaginated after the prelims; register is continuous with an unsigned leaf (the final page of vol. I, which appears to have been reset) being inserted after 4G4, and the leaf after the vol. II title-page being signed *4G, followed by 4H1. With a supplement at the end of vol. II. Ash was also the author of the popular grammar Grammatical institutes, first published in 1760 (1777 ed., q.v.). His dictionary is best-known for the blunder under 'curmudgeon', which Johnson had derived from cœur méchant on the authority of an 'unknown correspondent', but is given by Ash as 'from the French cœur unknown, méchant correspondent' (ODNB). ESTC t85693.
