LE SAGE, Alain-René (1668--1747)
[Gil Blas. Italian. 1774]
Gil Blas di Santillano storia piacevole del Sig. Le Sage tradotta dal francese dal Dottore Pietro Crocchi sanese ...
Colle Ameno 1774.
2 vols [ex 4] ; 18.1 cm. (8º)
III: 306, [2] p.
IV: 306, [2] p.

Volumes III and IV only of Pietro Crocchi's translation of Le Sage's picaresque novel. Soane was evidently very fond of Gil Blas, first published 1715--35 and corrected by the author in 1747, as there are copies (some partial) of ten different editions in three languages in his Library (qq.v.), some heavily annotated with vocabulary notes, and the book is mentioned in his amanuensis George Wightwick's lively description of his time in Soane's employment in 1826--27, when he was often asked in the evenings to read passages from Gil Blas, punctuated by Soane's exclamations of "P-o-o-r Gil!". See A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane, London 1927, episode 35 (especially pp. 398, 404--5). With a final leaf of errata and corrigenda in each volume.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting vols I--II. Heavily annotated by Soane with vocabulary notes with English translations and Italian synonyms in early parts of both volumes. Some are cropped at the fore-edge suggesting that these volumes may have been in Soane's possession during his grand tour. Tentative pencil plan on front free-endpaper of volume III. Inscription in pencil under chapter heading of vol. III chapter 1: How to take paint [out?] of Silk-.

Binding C18th Italian vellum, blind-ruled spine, without spine-labels, traces of ink-lettered spine-title and volume number.

Reference Number 1248
