[Plays. Selections. 17--?]
I malcontenti. Commedia XIV. La presente commedia di tre atti in prosa fu rappresentata per la prima volta in Verona nell'estate dell'anno 1754.
[2], 89--176 p. ; 18.2 cm. (8º)

Catalogued from the half-title. Dedication signed: Carlo Goldoni. An incomplete copy of this play only from an unidentified edition of Goldoni's plays. Text comprises sig. F4-8, G--L4; it commences with a dedication on pp. 89--93 to 'Giovanni Murray' i.e. John Murray, British Resident in Venice, 1754--65, on p. 89 and concludes on on p. 176 having a catchword 'Le Mas-' [= Le Massere]. This play follows 'I Malcontenti' with continuous pagination in vol. III, of the 15-volume Rome edition: a spese di Michele Puccinelli, nella sua stamperia posta a Torre Sanguigna, 1787, but if the present copy was acquired by Soane during his grand tour as seems plausible from the evidence of the binding and inscriptions, it would necessarily have an earlier publication date.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting a title-page and all before p. 89, and after p. 176. Bound first with a collection of five further plays by Goldoni published in Venice by Agostino Savioli: L'avventuriere onorato, 1771 (q.v); La bella selvaggia (q.v.), L'apatista (q.v.), La donna bizzarra (q.v.) all dated 1773, and Il vero amico (q.v.) dated 1774. Pencil sketch of a nude figure on front free-endpaper. Notes in ink on front free-endpaper, possibly by Soane: Binding 15 B. / Each play 5B. [i.e. baiocchi, a currency denomination of the Papal States from the fifteenth century until the unification of Italy]. A few marginal vocabulary notes in pencil passim, possibly in Soane's hand.

Binding C18th Italian vellum, spine lettering in ink 'Goldoni'.

Reference Number 1252

Additional Names Murray, John (1714?--1775)
