One of the most popular encyclopaedias of the period, first published in Paris earlier in the same year and translated into English in 1702. The subjects covered are arithmetic, algebra, geometry, astronomy, planetary theory, navigation, geography, optics, mechanics, statics, architecture and fortification (pp. 551--639) and music. Jacques Ozanam was a prolific author of mathematical treatises including the standard French explication of Euclid's 'elements' of the late seventeenth century, an important work on perspective, a course of mathematics (q.v.), and a popular series of mathematical 'Recreations' (q.v.). Page 735 misnumbered 375.

Copy Notes Plate at p. 550 inserted upside down. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper 0/4/0 / John Soane / 1805. Thomas Boone was paid 4s. on 22 July 1805. (Spiers Box). With Boone's price and codes in pencil on front free-endpaper, and earlier library shelf-marks in ink D-1 and 166.
