By John Sidney Hawkins, Esq. F.A.S.
London (Place), sold by Messrs. Faulder,, 1808.

The final installment in a paper war between Hawkins and J.T. Smith over corrections made by Smith to Hawkins' text for Smith's Antiquities of Westminster, 1807 (q.v.). Hawkins had written most of the text for the books, but when it was in proof stage and about to be published, Smith pencilled in some suggested alterations which so irritated Hawkins that he withdrew from the partnership and disowned the work. Smith published the volume with an 'Advertisement' giving his account of the dispute to which Hawkins immediately responded in A correct statement and vindication of the conduct of John Sidney Hawkins. Smith followed this with a pamphlet entitled Mr. John Thomas Smith's Vindication; being an answer to a pamphlet written and published by John Sidney Hawkins. For a full account of the dispute see B. Adams, London illustrated 1604--1851 (London 1983), pp. 213--23 and BAL, Early printed books, no. 3079. Soane was particularly interested in the buildings at Westminster for which he made unexecuted designs in 1794 and was a subscriber to Smith's Antiquities in 1807.
