The engraved head and tail vignettes are after Hubert Gravelot. This is the first edition of an immediate and lasting best seller. The Cambridge classicist Conyers Middleton was the occasional adversary of his colleague Richard Bentley (1662--1742). Middleton was encouraged in the writing and publication of this work by his patron and dedicatee John Hervey, Baron Hervey of Ickworth who campaigned tirelessly for subscriptions, resulting in a [23]-page list of over 1800 subscribers to the work in vol. I, and considerable profits to its author. ESTC t125960; CBEL II, 1711; Lowndes 1544.
