Large paper issue. Printer's name from colophon in each volume. With an additional title-page in each volume bearing a portrait vignette of Cicero. The engraved head and tail vignettes are after Hubert Gravelot. This is the first edition of an immediate and lasting best seller. The Cambridge classicist Conyers Middleton was the occasional adversary of his colleague Richard Bentley (1662--1742). Middleton was encouraged in the writing and publication of this work by his patron and dedicatee John Hervey, Baron Hervey of Ickworth who campaigned tirelessly for subscriptions, resulting in a [23]-page list of over 1800 subscribers to the work in vol. I, and considerable profits to its author. ESTC t125960; CBEL II, 1711; Lowndes 1544.
Copy Notes Volume I with the armorial bookplate of the physician and antiquary Dr Charles Chauncey (1709–1777), one of the original subscribers to the large-paper copies of the work whose library was sold in 1790. This is the copy in '2 vols, large paper' purchased at the Lyttelton sale, 1--6 July 1823 (q.v.), lot 49 for £1 13s. Soane paid the auctioneer George Robins a total of £17 8s. 6d. for books bought at the sale on 11 July 1823. (See Soane Journal, 11 July 1823). With former lozenge-shaped library shelf-labels lettered in ink 49 [over] 2 pasted on the spines.
Binding C18th marbled calf, gilt French fillet borders, gilt-tooled spines, black morocco spine-labels, marbled endpapers.
