The imprint is false; printed on the continent. A fictional biography by Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, first published 1731--1739. The novel, originally written in French, has a complex publishing history, the English translation of the first two volumes having appeared before the first editions in the original French, in Paris and Utrecht. Volumes III and IV were first published in French in Utrecht, 1732, and a spurious fifth volume in 1734; the final three volumes appeared in Paris, 1738--1739. Title-pages and half-titles reading 'Histoire De Monsieur Cleveland. Tome ...' printed in red and black. Volume IV has an oblong (in shape) woodcut floral title-page vignette; a variant has a square (in shape) floral title-page vignette. ESTC t115839.

Binding C18th marbled calf in red and black, gilt-tooled spines, gilt-tooled French fillet border with daisy ornament at corners, gilt-tooled turn-ins, blue paste-paper endpapers, red and olive morocco spine-labels, gilt edges.
