The 'Dictionnaire Portatif' has its own title-page reading 'Vocabulaire Italien Et François, François Et Italien, Pour Servir De Suite Au Maitre Italien De Veneroni', with imprint: A Paris: aux dépens des libraires associés, 1779, and separate pagination and register. The privilege leaf is dated 1777. First published in 1678, Giovanni Veneroni's popular Italian grammar book continued to be revised and reprinted into the nineteenth century. An earlier edition is also in Soane's library (q.v.).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on verso of first free-endpaper: Geo. Holgate to John Soan. / Rome Janry. 1780 --, with faint final 'e' added to Soane's name after 1783. When Soane left Rome in April 1780 it was in the company of the Reverend George Holgate and his pupil Michael Pepper of Dunmow. (See Darley, p. 52; see also Ruffinière du Prey (1982), pp. 144, 280, quoting SM Vol 162 'Notes Italy and Italian Language', pp. 328--329, which records Soane's departure date from Rome and his expenses en route to Florence.) Inscribed also in pencil Mondalant - segresaire de / Monsr Albani and in a tiny faint hand Never had more anxiety to write, nor never less to say. Pencilled vocabulary note on the blank final page.

Binding C18th mottled 'catspaw' calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments with centre-ornament of pomegranates, red morocco spine-label.
